It is with intense sadness that I inform you of the demise of my Guruji, Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman Sir. To say that this creates a void in the field of Carnatic music would be an understatement. As a soloist, accompanist, performer, composer, teacher and mentor, he stood unparalleled. His contributions to the field have been monumental. We are all privileged to have lived in the same generation, and to have, in some small way, tried to understand and appreciate his music. His combination of intellect, heart, spirit, religious and poetic fervor, and innate beauty in his renditions make his music a divine experience that can never be replicated. His music reflected his personality – clarity, sincerity, attention to detail and perfection, demanding a lot from yourself, and appreciation of beauty in everything that you see.
On a personal level, this loss is extremely difficult to bear. He has been so much more to me than a music teacher. He has taught me about life – about prioritization, commitment, honesty, sincerity, dedication, respect, devotion and beauty. I feel blessed to have received his guidance and hope in some small measure to meet his vast expectations.
